The purpose of this post is to expose my thoughts before stepping foot inside a Planet Fitness gym and to share my thoughts after working out for a week at their location.

I don’t like to think of myself as a very judgmental person, but in this case I can’t lie. I didn’t think of Planet Fitness as a “real” gym. There’s a few reasons for this.

  1. They give out pizza on Mondays.
  2. They provide bagels on Tuesday.
  3. They seem to hate anyone that lifts to get BIG.
  4. I can keep going, but I think you get the point by now.

After working out in my apartment’s small gym for 2 years, I decided to venture out an give another gym a chance.

I walked through the front doors of the closest gym around and got hit with a blast of cherry fragrance that was being pumped into the air, saw the candy on the check-in desk, and I was about ready to high-tail it out of there. I stayed trying to keep an open mind.

At this point, I am holding myself back from saying some outlandish comment; “Where’s the cotton candy and funnel cakes?” The worker gave me a tour of the Planet Fitness facilities – cardio station, a stretching area, massage zone, tanning zone, and the weightlifting area.

The cardio station was a bit intimidating. Rows of treadmills and elliptical looked like they could use some company.

I could count all of the members in these sections on a single hand. The stretching area, massage zone, and tanning zone weren’t exactly pulling the trigger on my decision either.

When you get down to the weightlifting floor the first thing you see is the “Lunk Alarm.” It is pretty funny to read it and not associate yourself with the definition written below the alarm.

Here’s a video of the Lunk Alarm🚨 in action.

What Sold Me?

The worker brought me up to the “sales floor,” AKA the check in desk and proceeded to explain the pricing.

You could pay about $10 a month and only go to your home gym, or you could pay about $25 a month for the Black Card and go to any Planet Fitness and you can bring a friend every time. I was sold. Sign me up.

Finding an inexpensive gym in the city is nearly impossible. I was glad to have a gym inside my apartment for the past 2 years, but it was time to move on. I missed having cables and different machines to get a lift with.

I also like to have a gym buddy at the gym. Don’t get me wrong. I like to get a solid workout with my headphones in and not worrying about anything in the world, but there’s is nothing better than killing the last 2 reps you didn’t think you could do just to show off to your gym partner. (Be sure to let me know if you are in New York and want to get a lift in.)

1 Week Planet Fitness Review

All in all, Planet Fitness a decent place to work out. You get the benefits of bringing a free workout partner when you go to the gym, and the price for the membership does not break the bank. Did I mention that you can go to any Planet Fitness too? I travel quite frequently, so this is a big perk. Planet Fitness… you have gained a new member… for now.

Where Do You Workout?

Please let me know in the comments below. I look forward to hearing from anyone who is willing to share. I am always looking for new places to try out.
